This week is World Breastfeeding Week.
Hats off to all the mamas that breastfed/are still breastfeeding your child(ren). Especially those who had conquered breastfeeding obstacles along the way (or still is).
I remember the very first time I breastfed Lucious, and now 13 months later, he is still getting breast milk and is a very healthy toddler. It wasn’t always easy, there were lots of tears and stress at the beginning, but we hung in there and stood by our decision to breastfeed our baby no matter what, because it is truly one of the best things you can give your baby.

20 tips for successful breastfeeding
The World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) and advocacy groups in over 170 countries are promoting this year’s theme, “Breastfeeding: Just 10 Steps. The Baby-Friendly Way”. These are guidelines for health care facilities that offer maternity services and care for newborns. In order to create an optimum environment to establish good breastfeeding practices, facilities should:
- Have a written breastfeeding policy.
- Train staff to implement this policy.
- Explain benefits of breastfeeding to all pregnant mothers.
- Help mothers begin breastfeeding within 30 minutes of birth.
- Show mothers how to breastfeed and maintain lactation even if separated from their babies.
- Breastfeed exclusively — no other food or drink unless medically necessary.
- Allow rooming-in with mothers and infants together 24 hours a day.
- Encourage breastfeeding on demand.
- Not use pacifiers with breastfeeding infants.
- Support the establishment of breastfeeding support groups and refer mothers to them upon discharge.
